Sunday’s Best Season 4 Premiere on BET: Recap Episode 1 & 2

Sunday Best Season 4
It’s Backkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk! BET’s Sunday’s Best premiered last night with auditions in Atlanta, Dallas and Los Angeles. This season will feature the same judges, Donnie McClurkin and gospel duo Mary Mary (Erica Campbell and Tina Campbell). As always, the beloved, Kirk Franklin will be the host.

The first episode of the two-hour series took place in Atlanta. The five Judges were comprised of Pastor E. Dewey Smith, and previous Sunday’s Best contestants, Durward Davis, Dontavious Boatwright, Crystal Aiken and Yanna Crawley. What can I say, the Atlanta auditions did not disappoint. It had an interesting mixture of good, bad and everything in between.

I especially liked the vocals on sixteen year old Anthony Brown, unfortunately he is too young to compete. What a shame! I would love to see him a few more times in the competition! The previous contestants turned judges gathered at the end to deliver an amazing vocal performance.

Check out a snippet of the Atlanta audition below:

In the second episode auditions were held in both Dallas and Los Angeles. S/N: Dallas was really the first city they visited so not sure why BET chose to feature it in the second episode. The highlight of the Dallas audition hands down goes to David Mann aka Mr. Brown, who came in the auditions with a scarf covering his face, singing the infamous, “This is Your Granddaddy”! Hilarious!

All in all, it looks like it may be a male winner this year, as there were several powerhouses in the auditions from the three cities. In total, ten contestants were chosen in Atlanta, five was selected in Dallas, and an additional ten were chose in Los Angeles.

Recap: Episode 1 of BET’s Sunday’s Best Season 3

Sunday's Best Season 3
Season 3 of BET’s popular gospel music show, Sunday’s Best kicked off tonight. If you have tuned in to it before then you already know the wonderful Kirk Franklin is the host. This season started off with a twist, the cast was in looking for gospel talents in Nigeria. The judges were Donnie McClurkin, Kim Burrell, and Britain’s Nigerian born gospel singing sensation Muyiwa Olanrewaju. If you ask me, Muyiwa was a bit critical of all the contestants but it seems like he really wants Nigeria represented well.

Overall, none of the contestants really stood out to me, if I had to make a hard choice I would probably go with Ekeng Bassey. For the most part it was a bit hard to listen to. I mean they truly had some terrible singers. There were a few light moments, like the impersonation of Kirk Franklin. But you have to know that most of this is just for TV. All in all, seven West Africans were chosen: Priscella Bello, Funni Oduyemi (whom judge Kim Burrell battled in song to give her a glimpse of what competition would be like), Christiana, Japheth David, Morolake, Ekeng Bassey, and, last but not least, Abraham Balogun. Abraham drove 12 hours to get to Lagos and waited all day long to stand before the judges. He sung Amazing Grace and he was able to win over 2 of the 3 judges. Donnie McClurkin was initially on the fence but conceded, Kim Burrell was moved by his journey, but Muyiwa did not feel as though he was good enough for the competition.

In case you missed it, on Friday Tina Campbell (from Mary Mary) and Season Two Sunday’s Best winner Y’Anna Crawley did a powerhouse performance of Mary Mary’s single “Heaven”. Y’Anna also sung “Grandma’s Hand” and did a great job, making it crystal clear why she was the winner. Anyway looking forward to next week’s auditions. Be sure to check back for updates!! Here is a clip of Y’Anna singing “Grandma’s Hand” on Season 2 of Sunday’s Best!!
